Causes of Agoraphobia
Genetics and environmental factors play a significant role in the development of agoraphobia. Agoraphobia mostly begins in early adulthood but can appear at any age. Agoraphobia is diagnosed more in females than in males. A person with an anxious temperament, other phobias (like social phobia, claustrophobia) and a family history of agoraphobia are at increased risk to develop the same condition. A stressful event in life (like the death of a parent) and a history of physical/sexual abuse are other factors that put a person at risk of developing agoraphobia. The children raised in an overprotective environment also have chances to develop agoraphobia later on in their lives. Use of tranquilizers and sleeping pills is also linked with agoraphobia in some cases.
Symptoms of Agoraphobia
The chief symptom of agoraphobia is anxiety and panic attack arising in crowds or public places or any situations where the sufferer feels stuck and is unable to find a way out. The places may include theaters, malls, elevators, public transportation, being in open spaces, standing in lines, cars, etc. The person having agoraphobia will have symptoms of anxiety like a rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, dizziness, nauseating feeling, hot flushes, sweating, trembling when they find themselves in such places or situations. Sometimes chest pain and fear of death may also be present. These symptoms may arise even before entering the dreadful situation from anticipation. The person with agoraphobia would always need someone to accompany him/her to the places they fear, to rescue them in case of a panic attack. In severe cases people tend to choose a safe zone, i.e., tend to avoid going to places they fear and confine themselves. In extreme stages of this condition, the affected person may not leave home even for doing important work.

1st I would like to say THANK YOU for this website. I’m taking care of my 90yr old mother and it has been extremely helpful.
But this is about me. I have had Agoraphobia for 30 years. I am extremely functional, but within my “limits”. What’s of for me tho is that I couldn’t even imagine having a “safe person”! I HAVE to travel alone. Also, I have no fear of death, just losing complete control. I’ve always found it is that there were symptoms that don’t suit me.
One site suggested Nat mur 200c ONCE a month, and others such as yourself recommend Aconitum napellus, but not sure what dose.
Any help you could offer would be much appreciated. Again, thank you so much for this site!
Barbara
I have several problems that I hope you can be of help. I do have a lot of fear, mainly of people and being social. Like talking to them or being in crowds or even small groups. I also have been depressed for a long time and cry a lot.
Also, I have an autoimmune disease called Sjogren’s. It causes dry eyes, mouth and dryness in other organs, like lungs. As well, I get chronic fatigue and a lowered immune system.
Thank you, Lucinda
