Blepharospasm refers to involuntary contraction/twitching/spasm of the eyelid muscles causing closure of the eyelids. In this condition, the muscles controlling eye movement undergo twitching quickly and uncontrollably. Blepharospasm begins as increased blinking of eyes, or mild twitches or just as eye irritation. In some cases, fatigue, sensitivity to bright light, dry eyes, blurred vision may also be present. With the progression of the condition, the eyelid muscles may spasm and it becomes difficult to open the eyes. In severe cases, the spasms can become so intense that it leads to closure/shutting of eyelids for long periods of time. Visual disturbance/periods of inability to see may arise due to an inability to open their eyelids. There are two types of blepharospasm. First type is primary/benign essential blepharospasm that occurs without any known cause. The second type is secondary blepharospasm that results from some underlying cause.
Homeopathy carries an excellent scope to treat twitching and spasm of eyelids. The medicines used are entirely safe and natural. They help to relax the muscles of the eyelids and gradually reduce the frequency and intensity of eyelid twitching and spasms. They also manage any associated symptoms with it. In mainstream medicines, botox injections are mainly followed as a line of treatment and when cases are severe or unresponsive to botox, then surgery is recommended. Here homeopathy is a great non-invasive alternative and safe treatment option that treats this condition very gently with no adverse effects and prevents surgical intervention in most cases.
Homeopathy stimulates body’s self -healing system
Homeopathy offers a natural cure in these cases by boosting the self-healing mechanism in the body to overcome this issue. When a proper course of homeopathic treatment is followed as suggested by a homeopathic doctor, most mild to moderate intensity cases recover completely.
Individualized prescription
Keeping in view the individual characteristic symptoms of a person, the homeopathic remedies are selected for every case of blepharospasm. The symptoms in every case are thoroughly evaluated and analysed by a homeopath for finalizing a medicine. Besides, the potency and repetition of medicine is decided separately in each case.
Safe medicines with zero side effects
Homeopathic medicines for blepharospasm are safe to use and are devoid of any side-effects. Homeopathic medicines being prepared from organic substances are toxin-free and treat this condition without any adverse reactions. They can always help and never harm in any case.

Cause of Blepharospasm
The cause behind blepharospasm is still not clear. However, it is thought to arise due to the abnormal functioning of the basal ganglia (area of the brain that coordinates movements). There are also some reports suggesting that blepharospasm may occur from activation of cells of the facial nerve in the absence of any signals from the brain. Genetics and heredity are also thought to play a role in the development of blepharospasm. Some of the risk factors for blepharospasm are head or facial trauma, family history of dystonia and medication used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Women are more likely to get blepharospasm as compared to men. Fatigue, bright light, stress, anxiety, wind, and air pollution tend to worsen blepharospasm. Minor twitching of eyelids is frequently related to stress, fatigue, use of caffeine/tobacco and lack of sleep. But in certain cases, it can be related to blepharitis (inflamed eyelids), dry eyes and conjunctivitis (inflamed conjunctiva i.e. the transparent membrane lining the eyelids and eyeball) also. It can also be related to certain conditions that include Tourette’s syndrome ((a condition causing involuntary motor tics and vocal tics. Tics are rapid, habitual, spasmodic contractions of muscles), multiple sclerosis (condition in which immune cells damage the protective covering of the nerves out of a misdirected response) and Parkinson’s disease (it refers to nervous system disorder with symptoms including hand tremors at rest, slowed movement, impaired posture and balance, rigid muscles, and changes in speech).

Dear Dr Sharma,
What could be a suitable homeo medicine for frequent blurry vision for blepharitis and low humidity as now in Alberta, Canada ?
Hi Dr Sharma,
I have had eye issues esp right eye for best part of a year – gritty, sore and bloodshot (diagnosed with blepharitis by optician). Regular bathing didn’t help alleviate all symptoms. Recently took Euphrasia 200 and significant improvement in dry eyes and look of eyes (no longer red). But right eye still sore and now has flickering lower lid throughout day. I would be so grateful for any advice.
Thank you so much
