Approximately 50 % to 70 % people who suffer from skin rosacea carry a chance to suffer from ocular rosacea. Ocular rosacea mostly affects people between the age group of 30 to 50 years.
Causes
The reason behind it is not clearly known. But there are certain factors linked with. These factors include family history of ocular rosacea, eyelash mites, blockage in the eyelid glands, and environmental factors. Apart from this there are few factors that tend to worsen it. These factors majorly include taking alcohol, spicy foods, caffeine, emotions (like anger, stress), sunlight, extreme temperatures, intense exercise, hot baths and some medications like cortisone creams.
Symptoms
The symptoms of this condition are itching, stinging, burning, dryness in the eyes and watering from the eyes. Few symptoms other than this include gritty / foreign body sensation in the eyes, light sensitivity or photophobia and blurred vision. Along with these the eyes also appear red and there is swelling of the eyelids. If skin symptoms and eye symptoms are present together then it is not necessary that intensity of both will be the same. In ocular rosacea the cornea (a transparent membrane that covers the front of the eye) can be affected sometimes. The chances of involvement of cornea are more if there is complaint of dry eyes. When corneal complications are present vision complaints arise. In severe cases vision loss can arise.

Hi DR Sharma,
Pleasure to e-meet you!
Are you doing consultations for eye rosacea? I have lots ot red vesicles on the sclera – any recommendation?
thank you
Tanya
Hi Dr, Sharma,
My name is Brenda, I have been told that I have ocular rosacea, I definitely have facial rosacea. My eye symptoms are dryness, profuse watering several times a day, but in general the water all day. Itching and the oil glands are not producing the oil they should sometimes not at all. This has been going on for 2 years now. I have seen an opthomalagist and recently they prescribed Restates 2 x a day.
I have been taking flax seed oil, omega 3’s, scrubbing the eyelash ridge gently with a special soap 3 or more times a week. Hot compress on eyes for 5-7 minutes 5 days a week. I have been following this routine since last November it has improved some, oh, I almost forgot I have the beginnings of cataracts.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi what’s the best remedy for me to try? I have blepharitis most likely caused by rosacea. I was put on doxycycline and given steroid drops. I’ve stopped the doxy and I’m now to use steroid drops when I get flare ups. My main symptoms are redness of the cornea, especially around the pupil at the out edges or towards inner corner, but always coming near the pupil. (I do go regularly to my ophthalmologist to ensure my eyes are ok etc). I find my eyes get drier towards the evening, and my lids feel heavier in the eve. I want to close my eyes or someone press down (not for long) on my eyes. They don’t really itch. When my eyes feel good they are light, easy to open and not dry. I’ve tried the following remedies, I see a little improvement but nothing had really made it go away:
Aconite – helps with pain relief but feels like it’s a temporary fix
Rhus tox – seemed to work on day one and day 2 but then I felt the condition wasn’t improving
Staphisagria – seemed a little improvement over 2 days but nothing markedly improved
Euphrasia – no effect
Sulphur – no effect
At times I have tried Argent and Nat Mur – I don’t recall those really working
What would you suggest based on my symptoms?
