Homeopathic medicines to deal with hard stool

Hard stool is a very common problem. It mainly tends to arise when stool moves very slowly through the large intestine (colon). In the colon, the water is normally absorbed from the stool and when the stool passes slowly in the colon, it results in more water being absorbed from the stool. It leads to dry, hard stool that can be painful to pass. Certain lifestyle factors like the diet of a person (low fiber content diet), lack of physical activity, decreased fluid intake and ignoring the urge to pass stool also contribute to it. It may also arise from the use of certain medicines like iron supplements, calcium channel blockers and some medicines used for the treatment of depression.

In some cases, hard stools may arise from medical conditions. First, among them is IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) that refers to a functional disorder of the large intestine characterized by altered bowel movements (diarrhoea or constipation or alternation between these two), stomach cramps and bloating. Second is hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). Others include celiac disease (disease in which eating gluten – a protein found in wheat, rye, barley – damages the small intestine of the persons suffering from this disease due to an autoimmune response), intestinal obstruction and diabetes. Hard stool may cause pain when passing stool, pain in the abdomen, bloating, straining to expel stool and bleeding with stool. Hard stool can lead to some complications like anal fissures (cuts/crack in the lining of anus), piles (swollen, dilated, inflamed veins around the anus and in the lower rectum), intestinal blockage and rectal prolapse (pushing out of rectum out of the anus respectively).

Blocked Nose troubling you at Night? Simple Homeopathic remedies will bring relief

Blocked nose at night can be quite uncomfortable and disturb a good night’s sleep. It can be caused by different reasons like flu, cold, allergies, polyps, etc. It is not that these conditions do not block the nose during the day, but while we lie down on the bed at night, the blockage of nose can worsen due to some reasons. Firstly, on lying down blood flow to the head increases which can lead to swollen blood vessels in nostrils that worsens stuffy nose. Secondly, lying flat on the bed at night in a person already having a stuffy nose might worsen the complaint. In the day, when standing or sitting, the  mucus keeps draining out from natural gravity pull.

But when lying flat in bed the body has to work against gravity and it becomes difficult for the sinus fluids to drain from nose. As a result fluid builds up in the nose that increases stuffiness. Another reason for blocked nose can be dry air in the room at night. To combat the dryness, nostrils may produce extra mucus to moisten nostrils which further add to the blockage. Blocked nose can be attended with symptoms like sneezing, nasal discharge, nasal irritation, post nasal discharge (PND), snoring, headache, sleep apnea (a sleep disorder in which momentary pauses in breathing occurs several times during sleep) depending on the cause behind it.

Homeopathic Management

What Causes Piles During Pregnancy And After Childbirth?

If we talk of piles during pregnancy, usually piles occur during the third trimester (last three months of pregnancy). During pregnancy, extra pressure is exerted on the abdomen and the pelvic area from the growing baby. As a result, circulation of blood to the pelvic area is affected resulting in pooling of blood in the veins. Secondly, increased progesterone levels cause relaxation of walls of the veins predisposing them to get swollen. Additionally, constipation (which is one of the major reason behind piles) is a common problem faced by many women during pregnancy due to hormonal changes (which slows down movement of food through the gastric tract), pressure put by the growing baby on the intestines of the mother, intake of iron and calcium supplements that can also contribute to piles during pregnancy. Intense straining and prolonged pushing during labor pains also contribute to piles after childbirth. Piles are common especially after vaginal delivery, however it can still arise after a C-section. An instrumental delivery (like forceps delivery in which a doctor uses a tool to grasp the head of the baby to get the baby out of the birth canal) also increases risk of piles.

 Causes of Mucus in Chest

1. Infections

Viral or bacterial infection can lead to mucus in the chest. Infections such as cold, flu could be the main reasons. It arises when infection from the upper respiratory tract (nose, throat, sinuses) reaches lower respiratory tract (bronchial tubes, lungs). COVID -19 though does not lead to mucus in the chest but can cause pneumonia that causes chest congestion.

2. COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)

It refers to a group of lung diseases, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, that make breathing difficult for a person. Inflammation of bronchial tubes that carry air to and from the lungs is called bronchitis. It can lead to excessive mucus production in the chest. In emphysema, air sacs in lungs are damaged causing shortness of breath

5 Best Homeopathic Medicines for Varicocele

Varicocele refers to an abnormal enlargement of veins (pampiniform plexus) in the scrotum (a sac that holds the testicles). Varicocele may lead to discomfort but mostly it causes no symptoms. It is a very common problem and around 10 to 15 out of 100 males are found to suffer from this problem. Though not a life threatening problem, it can lead to low sperm count and male infertility.

Homeopathic Treatment Of Varicocele

Homeopathy is very effective in mild to moderate cases of Varicocele and prevents surgery in most cases. The medicines act at the root of problem to bring excellent results. They stimulate the self-healing mechanism of the body to aid natural cure. As the healing system of the body is strengthened, the disease is completely eradicated. The homeopathic medicines improve blood flow in veins and provide relief in pain and swelling of scrotum.

Homeopathic medicines for Varicocele

The most widely recommended homeopathic medicines for Varicocele are Hamamelis, Calcarea Fluor, Pulsatilla and Arnica.

1. Hamamelis

One of the top grade medicines for Varicocele is Hamamelis.  This medicine works effectively to improve blood circulation in veins and reduce blood pooling. The person needing it experiences pain and swelling in scrotum. Varicocele with enlarged testicles or testicles that are hot and painful when touched is treated well with Hamamelis. Drawing pain in scrotum is marked. Hamamelis is also one of the most well-indicated medicines for Varicocele with severe inflammation of testicles (orchitis) and markedly palpable veins.

2. Calcarea Fluor

This is another highly recommended natural medicine in homeopathy to manage several complaints where blood circulation is not proper in veins and there is congestion of blood in veins. This medicine ensure good blood flow in veins and improves swelling and pain in scrotum.

3. Pulsatilla

Pulsatilla is one of the most outstanding medicines for Varicocele in cases where pain occurs in scrotum. Pain can be aching, tearing or lacerating in nature. Walking increases the problem. The person complains of soreness in the testes. Burning sensation may also occur in scrotum.

4. Arnica

In case of a swollen scrotum especially after injury, Arnica is considered one of the outstanding medicines for Varicocele. Pain and soreness, tenderness in scrotum are usually indicated in cases where Arnica will work best. Pain may extend from scrotum to abdomen. Pain is usually shooting type.

5. Nux Vomica

Nux Vomica is one of the leading medicines for Varicocele with drawing, constricting or sharp pain in the testicles. Pain gets worse while walking or standing, while relief occurs by sitting. There is heat in the scrotum and sensitivity to touch.

6. Ruta

Ruta is another homeopathic remedy of great benefit in Varicocele cases.  If Varicocele arise from over-straining of veins in scrotum like from weight lifting, some sort of exercises, then Ruta is the ace medicine.

7. Aesculus

This is another homeopathic medicine whose function is to ensure proper blood flow in veins. Its use is recommended when there is shooting pain in right testicle. Its use is also advised for drawing pain in testicle on either side.

Homeopathic medicines for low sperm count

To deal with low sperm count which can occur in people suffering from Varicocele, the two most important homeopathic medicines are Radium Bromatum and X-ray. It is advised to consult a physician to take these medicines who will properly guide you regarding potency and repetition of medicines.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Varicocele?

Varicocele may not lead to any symptoms in many cases. However, some signs and symptoms may indicate Varicocele:

1. A lump in scrotum/swelling in the scrotum: In most cases of Varicocele, a lump or swelling is present in the scrotum. In case of small Varicocele, lump may be felt but may not be seen. In large Varicocele, the enlarged and twisted veins in scrotum are visible looking like a bag of worms.

2. Side: Varicocele mostly is one-sided. Either side can be involved, however, chances of left-sided Varicocele remain higher. Varicocle is 80-90 per cent times common in left testicle. In rare cases, both sides can be involved.

3. Pain: Varicocele is usually painless but in a few cases, might also cause pain. The pain in the scrotum is usually dull, throbbing-like but rarely sharp in nature. Increased temperature in testicles, increased pressure in scrotal veins and stretching of nerve fibers in the spermatic cord from dilated veins may be a contributing factor in causing pain. The pain may worsen as the day progresses, while standing or after physical exertion. Pain may get better by lying on the back. The testicles may feel heavy as well.

4. Size: The affected testicle may look smaller than the other.

5. Growth of left testicle at low pace during puberty.

6. Varicocele may lead to decreased sperm production, reduced sperm motility and quality of sperm might reduce too. Shape of the sperms may become abnormal. Infertility may also arise in some cases. Lastly it can cause atrophy/shrinkage of size of the testicles.

What are the causes behind Varicocele?

1. There are two testicular arteries that supply oxygenated blood to testicles and two testicular veins which carry deoxygenated blood from testicles to heart. There is a network of small veins called pampiniform plexus in the scrotum (which holds the testes) that carries deoxygenated blood from testicle to testicular vein. The reason behind Varicocele is not clear yet. However, it is thought to arise from pooling of the blood in the veins of pampiniform plexus. This happens when the valves inside the veins of spermatic cord, that allows one-way blood flow, do not work the right way as they should. It prevents blood from flowing properly in needed direction resulting in the back (reverse) flow of blood causing the veins with in scrotum to widen and enlarge resulting in Varicocele.

Spermatic cord is a tube that hangs testes in scrotum and contains testicular artery, lymphatic vessels, pampiniform plexus, nerves and vas deferens which carry sperms from testes to penis).

2. Deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in one of the deep veins of body usually in legs), thrombosis (blood clot within blood vessel) of pampiniform plexus are some of the rare causes of Varicocele.

3. It usually affects males between 15-25 age group.

4. Tobacco smoking may increase risk of Varicocele.

Classification

Based on size and clinical examination these are classified as follows:

1. Large varicoceles: These can be easily detected by simple inspection (looking over) and appear like bag of worms.

2. Medium varicoceles: These are the ones that are detected by palpation with fingers even without any bearing down by patient.

3. Small varicoceles: These varicoceles can only be detected during strong bearing down (valsalva).

Another classification is as follows:

1. Pressure type Varicocele: In this spermatic vein fills with blood resulting in grade I Varicocele.

2. Shunt type Varicocele: In this intense build-up of blood damages spermatic vein and also other veins causing larger varicocele including grade II and III.

Grading system of size of Varicocele

Grade 0 – When varicocele is not detected physically and can only be seen on conducting an ultrasound of scrotum

Grade I – When varicocele is felt only on palpation (checking with fingers) during valsalva maneuver when standing

Grade II – when varicocele is palpable when standing even without valsalva maneuver but not visible

Grade III – When it cause visible scrotal deformity i.e. varicocele is visible through scrotal skin

Grading as per colour Doppler, given by Sarteschi, is as follows:

Grade I – In this reflux occur at groin level during valsalva. There is no testicular enlargement.  Deformity of scrotum is absent.

Grade II – Reflux occurs at the level of proximal part of pampiniform plexus only during valsalva. There is no testicular enlargement or deformity of scrotum.

Grade III – In this grade, reflux occurs in distal vessels at level of lower scrotum during valsalva. There is absence of testicular enlargement or scrotal deformity.

Grade IV – There occurs spontaneous reverse blood flow increasing during valsalva and in addition to this, scrotal deformity and testicular hypertrophy (enlargement) may also be there.

Grade V – There occurs reflux in dilated pampiniform plexus at rest that increases during valsalva and is always attended with testicular enlargement.

Complications

1. Impaired sperm production: A certain body temperature is required in testes for normal good quality sperm production, maturation and function. The heat in scrotum is approx. 5degree less than that of the belly. The pampiniform plexus works to cool down blood in testicular artery prior its entry to testicle. If there occur enlargement of veins in pampiniform plexus its normal functionality drops resulting in overheating in testes that affects normal production of sperms. When microscopic semen examination is done in case of Varicocele, stress pattern is seen. The sperm count becomes low, the sperms show poor motility and there is increase in number of abnormal sperms.

2. 4 out of 10 males having Varicocele face infertility.

3. Low testosterone production by Leydig cells in testes

4. In boys, varicocele may slow testicle growth during puberty

5. Atrophy of testes

What other conditions needs to be ruled out when making diagnosis of varicocele (differential diagnosis)?

1. Hydrocele: Swollen scrotum from collection of excessive fluid in the sheath (tunica vaginalis) surrounding a testicle.

2. Epididymitis: Inflamed epididymis (a coiled tube at the back of testicle that stores sperms while they mature and carries sperms from the testes to the vas deferens).

3. Spermatocele: cyst developing inside the scrotum

4. Trauma

5. Testicular and paratesticular tumour

6. Testicular torsion: An emergency condition in which spermatic cord that carries blood to testes rotates and twists

7. Inguinal hernia: Bulging of the contents of the abdomen through a weak spot in lower abdominal wall

Diagnosis and Investigations

1. Physical examination: A physician can make a clinical diagnosis by visually checking scrotum and by palpation (checking with fingers and hands of scrotum). In many cases, Varicocele cannot be seen or felt in lying down position. So the doctor may also examine scrotum in standing position.

He may ask you to stand up, take a deep breath in standing position and to hold the breath and bear down to do the scrotal examination and check for any enlarged veins in it. It is called as Valsalva maneuver.

2. Scrotal Doppler ultrasound: Doctor may recommend doppler ultrasound of scrotum to confirm diagnosis and rule out any other cause of the symptoms.

Veins of pampiniform plexus wider than 3mm with blood flow in the wrong direction during valsalva maneuver is indicative of Varicocele. If it is Varicocele, grading will also be done with its help. Ultrasound also checks the size of testicles.

3. In case of Varicocele on the right side, it is important to rule out any mass or tumour in abdomen that may be the cause. There is a possibility of renal cell carcinoma in case of isolated right-sided Varicocele. It could be occurring from vena cava obstruction from right renal cancer vein tumour thrombus. If suspected CT scan is recommended.

Though having a swelling and lump in scrotum might be indicative of Varicocele, as it is one of the reasons behind it, but just on this basis, it cannot be confirmed as Varicocele. Other possible reasons could be hydrocele, spermatocele, epididymitis, tumour, so a proper case study and investigations (mainly ultrasound of scrotum) is required to reach a proper diagnosis.

Why is Varicocele more common on left side?

The reason could be the different path followed by both internal spermatic veins. The right internal spermatic vein terminates directly in inferior vena cava having low pressure while the left-sided internal spermatic vein connects with left renal vein with comparatively high pressure. Additionally, the particular angle at the junction of the left internal spermatic vein and left renal vein contribute to high chances of left-sided Varicocele.

Do I need to undergo any investigation to diagnose Varicocele?

Yes, for confirmatory diagnosis of varicocele, a doppler ultrasound of scrotum is required.

Does Varicocele go away on its own without treatment?

Once Varicocele occurs, it does not go away onits own. It is always advised to seek medical treatment in such cases.

7 Homeopathic Remedies For Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN or TGN), also known as tic douloureux/ Fothergill disease/ Prosopalgia refers to a severe electric shock like facial pain on one side along the course of the trigeminal nerve (usually due to compression, irritation or damage to the nerve). The trigeminal nerve is the fifth cranial nerve (out of 12 pair of cranial nerves) and is the largest of all the cranial nerves. There is one trigeminal nerve on either side of the face. The pain of trigeminal neuralgia is typically abrupt and intense. Even a little stimulation of the face like washing the face, brushing teeth can excite a sharp pain on the face in these cases. The severity of the pain may cause a person to contort his/her face in a twisted expression. It is considered one of the most severely painful disorders known to medical science.

For nerve disorders including trigeminal neuralgia, homeopathy offers marvellous treatment. Homeopathic medications can give long-term relief in cases of Trigeminal Neuralgia and can enable an individual to lead a good quality of life. It makes use of natural medicines for treating it, ensuring its safety. Homeopathic treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia works by acting internally at the root of the problem to give excellent results in Trigeminal Neuralgia.

Homeopathic medicines work by managing the acute symptoms first that are most troublesome and difficult to bear. It helps to minimize the intensity and the duration of pain. Further it works to minimize the recurrence of pain episodes. Caught in the early stages (with the initial symptoms), homeopathic medicines can help cure the condition with minimal chances of recurrence.

Homeopathy treats every case of Trigeminal Neuralgia individually. In the homeopathic mode of treatment, the treatment begins once the complete case history is understood from the patient. In Trigeminal Neuralgia, signs and symptoms, the location of pain, type of pain, time when pain is worse, trigger factors and modalities of the pain, means the worsening and relieving factors are all considered to finalize the right prescription.

With regular homeopathic treatment the dependency on conventional treatment, that mainly uses antiseizure medicine, muscle relaxants, botox injections with its own side effects, can be reduced to a great extent. In many cases, surgery is recommended in mainstream medicine. But homeopathic treatment, if followed as per the homeopathic doctor;s advice for the prescribed duration,  can help one get away with surgical intervention in many cases with mild to moderate intensity.

Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia

The most commonly affected areas of the face in Trigeminal Neuralgia include the jaw and lower face.

1. Area of pain: The pain can be focused on one spot (depending upon the branch that is affected) or can advance to a widespread area. The areas that can be affected include jaws, eyes, cheeks, lips, and teeth, area around the nose, ears, gums, forehead.

2. Type of pain: Pains can be excruciating, tearing, shooting, jabbing, or feel like electric shocks. Trigeminal neuropathic pains that produce tingling and numbness (usually due to oral surgery or dentistry) may also occur. There may be a tingling, pin needle sensation or numbness in the face before the development of pain. Burning sensation in the face may also be felt after pain has subsided. Twitching (involuntary muscle contraction causing jerking in the affected part) in the face may also occur after an attack of pain.

3. The side of the face affected:Usually, the pain is unilateral (one-sided). Mostly, it involves the right side of the face. But in some cases, it can be bilateral (affecting both sides of the face) for example in case of multiple sclerosis. In case of bilateral TN though both sides are affected but at a given time only one side has symptoms. Very rarely, both sides show symptoms at the same time.

4. The intensity of pain:In most cases, episodes of pain are usually intense in nature (some sufferers have reported the pain being more intense than the pain of a heart attack). However, in some cases, pain can range from mild to moderate. With progression of the condition, pain becomes more intense with time.

5. Duration of pain:The pain attack lasts from a few seconds to a few minutes initially. As the condition progresses, the pain attacks can become longer.

6. The frequency of attacks:Intermittent isolated episodes of sudden pain tend to occur. Some may experience it only once a day and others may have it every few minutes or hours. It may happen every day for several days, weeks, months or even more than that. Sometimes, even months or years may pass after one attack (called remission period). If not treated, the attacks can become frequent and intense over time. Mild attacks may be experienced initially, but if progression takes place, long and frequent bouts of pain can occur.

7. Time of occurrence: It can occur once the patient is exposed to any triggering factors (and sometimes even without them). It never happens while a person is asleep.

What Causes Trigeminal Neuralgia (TGN or TN)?

It arises from the abnormal functioning of the trigeminal nerve. The main cause behind TGN is compression of the trigeminal nerve by a blood vessel. It damages the myelin sheath (protective covering of nerve fibers) of this nerve and results in the hyperfunctioning of the nerve. As a result of the damage, even a little stimulation on the portion of the face supplied by this nerve excites pain. In addition, the nerve is unable to close pain signals once nerve stimulation stops. The compression of nerve for a short period does not cause pain but long-term constant compression causes demyelination of nerve initially, followed by degeneration of axons (thin fibers extending from nerve cell that function to transmit electrical signals to nerve cells, muscles, glands).

Various causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia include:

1. Pressure:Approximately 95% of TN cases arise from pressure on this nerve. Pressure on the trigeminal nerve from the surrounding blood vessel (an artery – anterior inferior cerebellar artery, etatic basilar artery or a vein) at the base of the brain is the most common cause.

Pressure on the trigeminal nerve from a tumour may also lead to TN but that is rare. TN may also occur from pressure on the trigeminal nerve by an aneurysm (bulge in the wall of the blood vessel)

2. Trauma / Injury to nerve: Damage to the nerve can occur as a result of facial injury, dental injury or a surgical procedure (eg sinus surgery, oral surgery), stroke (brain damage arising from interrupted blood supply to the brain) can lead to TN.

3. Loss of Myelin Sheath:Myelin sheath protects the nerves. Loss of myelin sheath (which can occur as a result of aging or a condition like multiple sclerosis) can lead to Trigeminal Neuralgia. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder in which immune cells damage the protective covering of nerves disrupting communication between brain and body.

4. Inflammation:Inflammatory disorders like Lyme disease (a tick-borne disease caused by bacteria, of the Type Borrelia, known as Borrelia Burgdoferi) and Sarcoidosis (autoimmune disorder causing collection of inflammatory cells in a body part) can also lead to the development of Trigeminal Neuralgia.

5. Collagen Vascular Diseases: Diseases like scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematosus can trigger Trigeminal Neuralgia. In such diseases, the immune system causes inflammation in the collagen and surrounding joints.

However, it should be noted that in many cases, there is no specific cause for Trigeminal Neuralgia called as idiopathic TN.

What Are The Factors That Contribute to the Development of Trigeminal Neuralgia?

1. Family History:Trigeminal Neuralgia may run in families as it is related to malformation of blood vessels in the brain due to inheritance.

2. Age:Though any age group can be affected but it is common in people who are 50 years of age or above. The reason is that blood vessels get hard and elongated with age and there is sagging of brain that can make new contacts between nerves and blood vessels.

3. Womenare more affected with TGN as compared to men.

4. High Blood Pressure:People with high blood pressure issues are more likely to suffer from trigeminal neuralgia than those with normal blood pressure.

What Triggers Nerve Pain in TGN?

A person who has Trigeminal Neuralgia usually has a triggering factor that can result in the onset of an episode of TGN. Some of the most common triggering factors include washing the face, brushing teeth, talking, touching the face, chewing, smiling, shaving, putting on makeup, exposure to drafts of air, blowing the nose, etc.

Are any investigations required to diagnose Trigeminal Neuralgia?

A clinical diagnosis of Trigeminal Neuralgia can be made after evaluating the description of type, location, frequency and triggering factors of pain. A physical or neurological examination can be performed to determine the exact location of pain. These symptoms are enough for clinical diagnosis; sometimes, no tests are required. To rule out the possible causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia, an MRI of the brain may be advised to rule out any inflammation, brain tumor, or a blood vessel compressing the nerve.
